  17. I fresnel lens works on refraction, not difraction.  The only difference
  18. between a fresnel lens and a standard lens is the thickness.  Let me
  19. try to draw in ASCII (please bear with this)....

  35. Ok, you need to turn on smoothing on your terminal renderer :-)
  36. At any point on these two diagrams at an equal elevation the front and
  37. rear plane angles on both the standard and the fresnel lens are
  38. identical.  They will have the same focal charactaristics, becuse it is
  39. the angle of incedence that matters not the thickness of the lens.

  41. The fresnel lens is a standard lense cut into cylinders.  The top and
  42. bottoms of the cylinders (the angled surfaces) are cut off and fused
  43. together with the unnecessary middle thickness thrown away (in theory,
  44. in reality, they manufacture them in one piece :-).

  46. This structure allows a thin lens to attain a short focal length.  If
  47. you can't see how it works from a thin plastic lens where the rings are
  48. tiny, take a look at a fresnel theatre light, or, what the fresnel lens
  49. was invented for a lighthouse lens, and the sstructure will be very
  50. apparent.

  52. So while it would be a much more complex model, you should also be able
  53. to model a working fresnel lens in LightWave/modeler.

  55. Oh and one other tidbit while I am off topic... The s in fresnel is
  56. silent.

  60. Now that we will be seeing LightWave for SGI, what kind of performance
  61. can one expect from a 4D25G?  I got a price sheet from a used SGI
  62. dealer, their cheapest bundle...  A 4D25G, 16 Megs RAM, 330 Meg HD
  63. (yeah, I know I'd need to beef up both of those if I want to run more
  64. than the OS and the jello demo) keyboard, mouse, and a 19" monitor for 
  65. Under $2K!!  I expect it'd be in pretty banged up shape for that price
  66. but if it does its job, I'm not choosy.
